Skin cancer and how we’re fighting it

About a year ago my mother had a small spot on her lip. We really didn’t think anything of it and she had been to the doctor several times. It wasn’t until I noticed the spot growing rapidly that I forced her to see a dermatologist. He was pretty confident it was Basal Cell Carcinoma but would confirm with a biopsy. Regardless of what it was, it would need to be removed.

On Christmas eve, her doctor called with the results of her biopsy. It wasn’t BCC after all but. Like many people my mother had excessive sun exposure and used tanning beds in the 90’s. I’m even guilty. We know a lot more now than we did then. That’s why I am overly protective when it comes to my family and making sure they are protected.

It’s easy to be out and about only to realized you forgot to lather up. We’ve taken extra precautions for just those times. We keep sunscreen by the door, in the car, and I keep the sample size packets in my handbag. My girls don’t walk out the door until they’ve applied sunscreen. The sun here shines pretty much all day, I want to be prepared.
